Addictions and compulsions take many shapes and forms. The mistake is to equate not stopping with being a failure, lacking the willpower to see through what you’ve come to see as being necessary or in your best interests. Addiction is NOT simply a failure of willpower. It’s really a complex interplay of brain chemistry, habit and an attempt to cope with underlying needs, pain or stress.
YOU aren’t the problem, at least not as directly as you might think. There’s something in you that you were trying to cope with, and your coping mechanism has become the problem. I specialize in working with people experiencing the impact of addictive or compulsive behaviours, including compulsive sexual behaviours, which can have negative, or even destructive, consequences – for you or others?
You don’t have to cope with the ‘solution gone wrong’ alone. Contact me for a confidential conversation about how we can start to understand the history of what has become addiction, its origins and alternatives. I also offer support for people affected by the addictive behavior of someone close to them, or who is concerned about a friend or colleague.
On the other pages you’ll find introductory thoughts on how counselling can help you if you are experiencing other disturbing emotion conditions like stress, depression or anxiety.
